Highlights: Session II of "Quality Lecture Series on Artistic Aesthetics and Cultivation of ICH Inheritors" of Tsinghua BMW Innovation Center for ICH Safeguarding
The Tsinghua BMW Innovation Center for ICH Safeguarding, which is jointly established by the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. and Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research, will be based on the intangible cultural heritages (ICHs) and their inheritors selected from the "BMW China Culture Journey" visit in 2022, and form a project team composed of experts and supervisors from Tsinghua University and ICH inheritors for five ICH projects in Yunnan Province, namely the black copper silver art, Heqing silverware, Jianshui purple pottery, Bai tie-dye, and Yi embroidery, to explore innovative paths and extended models for ICH preservation, protection and development.
The Innovation Base for ICH Safeguarding organized a series of quality lectures from December 18 to December 29, 2021, with the participation of the supervisors who take part in this year's collaborative projects and special guest lecturers who support the innovative development of ICH skills to discuss on improving the artistic aesthetics and cultivation of ICH inheritors. On December 21, 2021, LUO Huan, Associate Professor and Master Supervisor of Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, gave a wonderful online lecture themed on Material Language in Contemporary Sculpture.

Associate Professor LUO Huan has made profound research on the material application of contemporary sculpture and puts forward that the most likely illusion in the process of material cognition is the relationship between material and shape, and ordinary viewers will first pay attention to form. In fact, the key to this way of thinking and appreciation lies in the production skills, not the materials.
Different materials bring different feelings to people, and this feeling comes from complex perceptual influences. It is an effective way of conception to express the theme and convey information by using the viewer's sense of the material. Of course, in addition to their own intuitive properties, some materials have been given different "meanings" in the process of being used. These special meanings associated with emotion, memory, and thinking are "physical properties", and the underlying information contained in the material produces performance possibilities and values. By presenting the material with special significance directly with an extremely simple appearance, the artist leads the viewer to rethink the value and significance of art.
When skills and ideas are deeply integrated and depend on each other, the expressive force of materials can be fully stimulated. Materials have meaning, tell our philosophy, and make us become who we are. Therefore, we can neither abandon traditional craftsmanship nor stick to the theme of traditional craftsmanship, but integrate modern features in form and content, and find a breakthrough path for intangible cultural heritage inheritance between tradition and modernity.
Associate Professor LUO Huan finally encouraged the representative inheritors of intangible cultural heritage to have a sense of pride and faith in their careers, boldly absorb different achievements and integrate them into their own system for their own use, so as to become an excellent cultural disseminator.

Professor ZHANG Lei made clear the purpose from the very beginning that design was both a work related to beauty and the perfect integration of science and art, while beauty could create a space for imagination and awaken inner peace.
What is the standard of good industrial design? Professor ZHANG Lei said: good industrial design includes making the product innovative, making the product useful, bringing the product beauty, explaining the product, not publicizing the product, being loyal to the product, lasting the product, paying attention to every detail, being environmentally friendly and provoking that the less, the better.
Professor ZHANG Lei believes that the things of the ancestors are worthy of admiration and that the classics will always be passed down. Therefore, only really good designs can stand the test of time. Modern design is not rough, boring and simple modeling, but should have meaning. In fact, modern design explains what modern design is with a kind of structural beauty. Representative inheritors of intangible cultural heritage should make great efforts in publicity to make others feel the meaning and value of intangible cultural heritage, the value of culture and the value of production technology.
Work reflects character. Professor ZHANG Lei emphasized that an excellent designer should first be an extremely elegant person. Your taste determines the value of the product. The most important work of designers is to choose materials and study the relationship between color, materials, texture, light, shadow, etc.
Finally, Professor ZHANG Lei encouraged everyone to pay attention to the value and power of design and to tell Chinese stories well in modern language, but not to amuse ourselves or indulge in self-admiration. At the same time, the modern design concept is combined with the wonderful traditional skills to carry forward the intangible cultural heritage.

There are various methods of material reconstruction technology, including the innovation of the theme, the change of the carrier, the breakthrough of the original use, the addition of new technologies and new materials and the combination of various processes and materials.
Material is to art what air is to men. How hair grows if there is no skin. Associate Professor ZHANG Hongjuan believes that art is based on the integration of certain media and multi-media materials, which stimulates the artist's imagination. Reconstructing and enriching artistic expression by using advanced science and technology and integrating with other disciplines is an important way to explore the various possibilities of art.
Where does traditional craftsmanship come from and where does it go? This is a topic that Associate Professor ZHANG Hongjuan who believes that innovation brings life to design and makes tradition fashionable has been focusing on for many years. What is innovation, how to innovate, what is innovation ability and what is creative thinking? These answers are related to whether traditional culture, including intangible cultural heritage, can truly reach the public and the future.
Product innovation is to "give the past a future". Associate Professor ZHANG Hongjuan pinned her hopes on the young ICH inheritors.
