ZHAO Chao, Vice President of Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research Attended the Final Review Meeting of the 2023 Seventh "Mayor's Cup" Qingdao Industrial Design Grand Prix
On November 23, 2023, the final review meeting of the 2023 Seventh "Mayor's Cup" Qingdao Industrial Design Grand Prix was held in Qingdao. It was hosted by the Qingdao Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, organized by Qingdao Daily Press Group, and co-organized by Qingdao Industrial Design Association and Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research. ZHAO Chao, Deputy Dean of Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University and Vice President of Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research (TASA), presided over the final review session of the competition as the chairman of the jury panel. Through this review, TASA once again demonstrated its first-class professional standards in the field of industry-university-research integration innovation, provided academic support and professional guidance for this Grand Prix, effectively promoted the construction of design disciplines in Qingdao and the exchange and development of related industries, and further enhanced the influence of Qingdao design in the professional field.

With the theme of “Brand with Diversity Empowered by Design”, the 2023 Seventh “Mayor’s Cup” Qingdao Industrial Design Grand Prix kicked off on November 1. Qingdao’s industrial enterprises, design institutions, universities and professional designers actively participated in the collection of works. The organizing committee received a total of 349 entries, including 175 in the product group and 174 in the concept group, covering seven categories: industrial equipment, transportation tool, home life, cultural and creative handmade products, urban renewal, digital technology, and brand communication.
The jury panel of the final review consisted of seven experts from Shandong and other provinces. As the chairman of the jury panel, Vice President ZHAO Chao organized guest judges to evaluate the entries. In the end, the product group recommended 10 gold awards, 15 silver awards, and 25 bronze awards; the concept group recommended 30 "future star" awards. During the review, Vice President ZHAO Chao made an in-depth analysis of the works regarding their innovative leadership, economic practicality, aesthetic comfort, safety and environmental protection, material standardization and other aspects, and provided the jury panel with unique design insights and professional support, injecting new vitality into Qingdao’s design innovation.

The award-winning works reviewed under the leadership of Vice President ZHAO Chao represent the forefront and trend of Qingdao design, demonstrate the creativity and imagination of Qingdao designers, and embody the trend and future of design-empowered industry development. These design works not only have artistic and appreciation value, but can also create better behavioral experience and higher value from the perspective of users and scenarios. At the same time, the holding of the competition also played an exemplary role in promoting urban development and industrial upgrading. Vice President ZHAO Chao said that this competition demonstrated Qingdao’s achievements in industrial design, and also provided an important reference for TASA to explore the development direction of integrating art and science, and to serve Qingdao’s economic, social and cultural development.
