The exhibition "Designing for Cultural Diversity: A Chinese Paradigm" was opened on the afternoon of April 18 in Milan, Italy. The event was initiated by Tsinghua University and co-organized by the Tsinghua Arts and Design Institute in Milan (ADIM), the China-Italy Design Innovation Hub (CIDIH), and the Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research.

This exhibition is one of the highlights of the "2023 China-Europe Design Innovation Forum". Focusing on artistic style and design innovation in the context of mutual appreciation, the event is designed to explore the contemporary values of Chinese and European civilizations through contrast, innovation and fusion, thus promoting cultural exchange, mutual appreciation of art and culture and science between China and Europe. The exchange and interaction between the traditional Chinese culture and the European culture can make a unique contribution in the creative transformation and innovative development of the traditional culture. It is committed to bringing together the design innovation power of China and Europe, and uniting the wisdom of government, industry and academia. And, it can promote the exchange and cooperation between Chinese and European industries on design innovation, and help build a global platform for design innovation ecosystem and cooperation.

The exhibition "Designing for Cultural Diversity: A Chinese Paradigm" is based on the "Technology Integration and Application Demonstration of Chinese Style Creative Intelligent Product Design", which is the research result of a key R&D project of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China. This event covers a wide range of fields, with design thinking from universities, companies and individuals being presented. Contemporary works with different themes, techniques and functions of "Chinese style" are collected to embody the wisdom of traditional "Chinese style" creation, as well as the exploration and reflection on the issues of the times. The chief curator of this exhibition is LU Xiaobo, a senior professor of liberal arts at Tsinghua University, Dean of the Tsinghua Arts and Design Institute in Milan (ADIM), and President of the Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research. The executive curator is ZHAO Chao, Vice-Dean of the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University and Vice President of the Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research.

Speech by LU Xiaobo, President of the Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research

In his speech at the opening ceremony, President LU Xiaobo expressed his wish that the exhibition should fulfill its role as a platform for dialogue among civilizations, where they can interact with each other in a humble manner. With vivid artistic language and works, people could also learn more about each other and discuss the values of the times. Highlighting respect for the world's civilizational diversity, he wanted civilizational exchange rather than civilizational divide, mutual learning rather than conflict, coexistence rather than superiority, and for all civilizations of the world to "share the common good"!

VIPs visited the exhibition and responded positively. They were, among others, WANG Hongwei, Vice President of Tsinghua University; Giuliano Noci, Vice-Rector for China of Politecnico di Milano; and Luciano Galimberti, President of ADI - Associazione per il Disegno Industriale and Curator of the ADI Design Museum. The VIPs were accompanied by QIN Chuan, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University; MA Sai, Dean of the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University; ZANG Yingchun, Executive Director of the Tsinghua Arts and Design Institute in Milan (ADIM); and WANG Jiansong, Chief Director of this exhibition and Executive Vice President of the Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research.

The exhibition will remain open until June 10, 2023.
