Symposium on "Design+: Intersection and Integration in the Smart Era" was Successfully Held at Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research

On June 16, 2023, the symposium on the "Design+: Intersection and Integration in the Smart Era", which is sponsored by the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University and organized by the Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research, was held at Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research. The symposium was supported by the Office of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Administration, Office of Technology Transfer, Department of Precision Instrument, Department of Computer Science and Technology, and School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University.

The purpose of the symposium is to clarify the significance of interdisciplinary integration for design education in the smart era so as to promote cooperation and innovation between different fields. Focusing on the role of artificial intelligence in various disciplines, the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and the high-quality development, and the application of AI-generated content (AIGC) in artistic design scenarios, experts and scholars from all walks of life who participated in the activities made wonderful speeches and communicated with each other.

Speech by XU Yingqing

XU Yingqing, Professor of Department of Information Art & Design, delivered the keynote speech titled with Some Thoughts on GPT. After summarizing and reviewing the intergenerational change in content generation driven by technology, he analyzed the coming era of content generated by artificial intelligence (AIGC), and explained the overview and development of AIGC technology combined with the application of art design scenarios. He suggested to current and future designers, "How can we avoid being replaced by artificial intelligence? We should just keep raising new questions."

Speech by WANG Yueting

WANG Yueting presented the Serving China's Strategic Capacity in Science and Technology and Creating a World-class Industrial Cluster, which is the latest achievement of the industry. According to her opinion, in the initial stage of the artificial intelligence revolution, the deep application of AI in the whole design industry will profoundly stimulate human imagination and realize technical equality and technical benefits. She also pointed out that in order to help China seize the opportunity in the construction of international clusters, we should adhere to the idea of "attracting overseas experts, cultivating local talents, artificial intelligence + robots, infrastructure + superstructure" for the artificial intelligence industrial clusters.

In the keynote speech entitled Seizing the Momentum and Resolutely Forging Ahead to Promote High-quality Development, LIU Qiang briefly described the discipline construction, major projects and scientific research platform of the Department of Precision Instrument. He pointed out that in order to cultivate talents required for the development of the country and society and meet the major needs of China, the Department of Precision Instrument has always been committed to discipline construction, so as to continuously enhance the high-level talents cultivation and improve the scientific research. He believed that with the help of this symposium, the interdisciplinary integration of knowledge and culture could be promoted through deeper exchanges and cooperation with the Academy of Arts & Design.

In the keynote speech by JIA Jia, Based on Computer Capacity, Promoting Talents Training in the New Era, Ms. JIA raised three questions: "What is CS+?", "Why CS+?" and "How to implement CS+?", and explained the connotation and extension of the CS+ system for talent training in the new era, and provided opinions and suggestions on the education and teaching reform and broader and deeper expanding of CS+ under the background of GPT.

Speech by HE Ping

HE Ping gave a keynote speech entitled with Metaverse Economy. He explained the expanded and extended concept of meta universe, summarized the details of the current development of meta universe at home and abroad, and made an in-depth analysis of the economic value, elements, characteristics and rules of meta universe. He pointed out that "the value generation in the metaverse is fundamentally different from that in the real world. The creation offering is almost without limitation, but scarcity can be created through relevant methods such as blockchain technology. The development of metaverse is a new challenge for enterprises, financial institutions, social governance and government supervision".

In the keynote speech entitled Transformation of Scientific and Technological Achievements and High-quality Development, LI Bing explained the innovative strength and vitality of the transformation and implementation of scientific and technological achievements in Tsinghua University in terms of the four aspects such as basic understanding, work measures, work progress, problems and thoughts. He also made a detailed analysis of the work priorities in 2023 based on the "Three Services" and "better, faster and more stable" achievements transformation.

After reviewing the development stage of design, MA Sai, Dean of the Academy of Arts & Design, pointed out that design science was interdisciplinary in nature. He said that this symposium was only an initiative, and hoped that under the background of the smart era and on the comprehensive university platform of Tsinghua University, a more in-depth discussion on the development path and talent training of the Academy of Arts & Design could be carried out.

According to QIN Chuan, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Academy of Arts & Design, there are two aspects of interdisciplinary integration, one is to combine information technology with art design, and the other is the way for design to support other disciplines. He pointed out that design thinking and design method is a kind of world outlook and methodology to understand and shape the world, which is worth advocating.

In the process of communication, YANG Dongjiang, Deputy Director of the Academy of Arts & Design, explained the influence and significance of current technological transforming on the development of education of design disciplines. In his opinion, the development of design discipline faces both opportunities and difficulties in the smart era. Therefore, it is necessary to actively respond to the challenges of new technologies and adapt to the transformation from basic discipline education to creative thinking education.

In the opinion of ZHAO Jian, Professor of Department of Visual Communication Design, the artificial intelligence is a state-of-the-art tool. If the creative materials and language texts created by designers accumulated to a certain extent, the original style could be formed. He pointed out that, in the teaching process, students should be properly guided to understand the role of artificial intelligence.

XIAO Wenling, Professor of Department of Textile and Fashion Design, pointed out that in the smart era, the standardized production mode originated from the industrial revolution has been gradually replaced by the new production mode, the reform of design is inevitable, and the interdisciplinary is an irresistible trend. Therefore, the way to train talents in the future is a key issue in the current era.

Speech by SHI Danqing

SHI Danqing, Deputy Director of Department of Information Art & Design, said that the interdisciplinary threshold and cost would be lowered due to the arrival of the smart era. Based on the possibilities of technology and the judgment of future design, full and effective communication could be carried out between liberal arts and engineering and even between different departments. In his opinion, experts with accumulated experience in art design should identify high-quality styles and paradigms, due to the head effect and long-tail effect generated from the burst of artificial intelligence.
