The Industrial Design of the "Anti-epidemic" Series Products Made by the Team Led by Deputy Director ZHAO Chao Won 5 Design Awards
In 2020, in the face of the sudden COVID-19 pandemic, ZHAO Chao, Deputy Dean of Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University and Deputy Director of Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research led the Health Care Industry Design Institute to give full play to the disciplinary advantages of integration and innovation of the design science, actively responded to national pandemic prevention and control, and cooperated with experts from the School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, and Biochip Beijing National Engineering Center of Tsinghua University, to carry out multidisciplinary collaborative researches, design a series of diagnostic products for pandemic prevention and control, and made multiple designs of products and services for diagnosis and control from the outbreak center to community, hospital and household and service. In the evaluation of relevant design awards held at the end of 2020, the industrial design - the Pandemic Prevention and Control series products won 5 national important design awards.
The Industrial Design of Nucleic Acid Testing Products for the Viruses of COVID-19 and Other Six Respiratory Viruses made by the team led by Deputy Director ZHAO Chao won the gold award of "China Good Design", the top award in the field of innovative design in China, jointly presented by Chinese Academy of Engineering, IDAC and Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society. "Good Design" is an important award for such Chinese design fields as industrial design, product design and service format design innovation, which was established by nearly 20 academicians and more than 100 experts with LU Yongxiang, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and academician of both Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chinese Academy of Sciences as the group leader, and PAN Yunhe, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering as the vice group leader, aiming to commend the comprehensive expansion and demonstration application of innovative design to society and industry. It is an important award for Chinese design to go global, expand its global influence, build good designs, good Chinese enterprises and good Chinese brands that lead the world and the era, and accelerate the realization of "three changes". At the award ceremony, academician PAN Yunhe, former vice president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, presented the award certificate to ZHAO Chao's team. The Industrial Design of Nucleic Acid Testing Products for the Viruses of COVID-19 and Other Six Respiratory Viruses also won the gold award of "China Emergency Rescue Innovative Design Competition" jointly presented by CKCEST and the industrial design branch of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society.
The industrial design of pandemic prevention and control series also won the special award of "2020 Shenzhen Global Design Award: Anti-epidemic Product Design Award", which is an important international competition and award jointly sponsored by Creative Cities Network, International Council of Design, World Design Organization, Shenzhen Design Week Organizing Committee and other important design organizations at home and abroad, under the organization of UNESCO. It aims to invite a wide range of design institutions and designers at home and abroad to look for design solutions for the global "anti-epidemic" cause, help mankind overcome COVID-19 as soon as possible, and realize the purpose of sustainable development of design.
The industrial design of the team led by Deputy Director ZHAO Chao - Industrial Design of Nucleic Acid Testing Products for the Virus of COVID-19 won the silver award of "Red Star Design Award". Industrial Design of Domestic Nucleic Acid Rapid Testing Kit for the Virus of COVID-19 was commended in the "Red Star Design Award". As one of the most influential industrial design awards in China, the 2020 China Red Star Design Award witnessed the participation of more than 7,000 products from more than 5,000 organizations around the world. After multiple rounds of evaluation by more than 40 well-known experts at home and abroad, the outstanding industrial design works were awarded for facing the "application scenarios" of pandemic prevention and control and poverty alleviation, demonstrating the special significance of science and technology leading, design innovation, green sustainability and humanistic care, and highlighting the era characteristics of "novelty", "premium" "beauty" and "fineness", in which the discipline characteristics of deep integration of industrial design and applied science and technology were reflected.
At the commendation conference held in 2020 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of Beijing Association for Promoting Democracy, ZHAO Chao was awarded the title of "Anti-epidemic Advanced Person" in recognition of his series of design and innovation works in pandemic prevention and control. 1.Industrial Design of Nucleic Acid Testing Products for the Viruses of COVID-19 and Other Six Respiratory Viruses
Facing the sudden outbreak of COVID-19, ZHAO Chao led his industrial design team to respond quickly to the guidance of academician ZHONG Nanshan, leader of the high-level expert group of the National Health Commission of People's Republic of China, academician LI Lanjuan, high-level expert of the National Health Commission, and academician CHENG Jing, give full play to the advantages of the industrial design discipline, and cooperate with Biochip Beijing National Engineering Center, designing and developing the microfluidic chip for rapid detection of the viruses of COVID-19 and respiratory viruses. Designed and developed by Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research, it is the first product in the world to detect 6 respiratory viruses including the novel coronavirus in 1.5 hours in one time. Through large-scale, modular and high-throughput rapid assembly and detection mode design, as well as safe, intelligent and easy-to-use experience design, the design team provided a humanized design solution to rapidly and efficiently respond to various sudden large-scale diagnosis and treatment needs in the pandemic. These design advantages were fully verified and applied in Huoshenshan Hospital, making a positive contribution to the victory of the battle against COVID-19 pandemic. Tsinghua University immediately donated 12,000 detection chip kits to Wuhan, which provided an effective medical testing guarantee for the fast and efficient COVID-19 screening.

2.Industrial Design of Mobile Laboratory for Nucleic Acid Detection of the Novel Coronavirus
Industrial Design of Mobile Laboratory for Nucleic Acid Detection of the Novel Coronavirus aims to establish an on-board full integrated microfluidic chip analysis system for on-site rapid detection of the novel coronavirus in an accurate, convenient, safe, comfortable and fast way, so as to realize the highly swift detection that the result can be obtained as soon as a sample is put in for various demand scenarios. The mobile laboratory, designed and developed by Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research, represents the integration and industrial innovation of chip laboratory technology, throat swab robot sampling technology, infrared radiation gradient temperature control virus rapid inactivation technology and other technologies, and is suitable to play an important role in the application scenarios with relatively poor medical conditions, such as border ports, community outbreaks and counties and villages. It can complete the experiment in 45 minutes with the on-board automatic microfluidic nucleic acid analyzer, which can well meet the requirements of on-site rapid and non-invasive detection for serious infectious diseases.

3.Industrial Design of Domestic Nucleic Acid Rapid Testing Kit for the Virus of COVID-19
ZHAO Chao has led his industrial design team to cooperate with experts from the School of Medicine and the School of Pharmacy of Tsinghua University to design a domestic rapid nucleic acid detection kit to meet the social needs in the post-pandemic period. This is the first domestic medical product that allows people to monitor their health status at home and complete nucleic acid detection within 30 minutes. It is designed by Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research. The design organically combines the simple and easy-to-use mode of the pregnancy test stick with the user-friendly experience of the game console handle, for which users only need to insert the throat swab collected by themselves into the device, and push and pull the device handle in accordance with the operation steps similar to using the game console. After waiting for 20 minutes, they can observe the detection results on the window test strip of the device. The kit realizes an integrated and highly sensitive self-service detection, and is in the leading position in the world in terms of detection time, detection accuracy, family convenience and user experience design.

4. Design of Intelligent Monitoring Skynet System and Services for Serious National Pandemic
In order to cope with the new and unexpected infectious diseases that may occur in the future, the industrial design team and the technology research and development team have cooperated to tackle key problems and build an automatic pandemic monitoring and reporting system and a monitoring service system for all provinces, cities and counties in China. Through service design and industrial design methods, they have integrated the new pathogen detection technology with 5G communication, big data and artificial intelligence technology to design a networked, real-time and automated pandemic monitoring and reporting system. The system, designed by Tsinghua (Qingdao) Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research, allows the government decision-makers to keep abreast of the development of the pandemic at any time until its end by ensuring first-hand data networking and real-time reporting through humanized designs, and constitutes the "Skynet" of intelligent pandemic monitoring, to minimize the loss in terms of people's life safety and national economy brought by the pandemic.
